April 2, 2020 COVID-19 UPDATE CONCERNING YOUR SCHEDULED TAX PAYMENTS

The news just keeps getting worse every day.  We hope you and your loved ones are staying safe and healthy.  Social distancing is hard, but some areas are reporting that it is successful.

We are writing today to update you on how you can change your tax payment with the IRS if your returns have already been filed.

For those of you who have scheduled payments prior to the original April 15th filing deadline and would like to change your payment date, here is information from the IRS website on how to do so:

If you scheduled a payment as part of filing your tax return (authorizing an electronic funds withdrawal), you may revoke (cancel) your payment by contacting the U.S. Treasury Financial Agent at 888-353-4537. You must call to make a payment cancellation request no later than 11:59 p.m. ET two business days prior to the scheduled payment date.  For more information visit https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/filing-and-payment-deadlines-questions-and-answers.

If you do not remember what payment date was scheduled, look inside your tax packet – the result sheet on the right hand side shows the amount and the scheduled payment date.

Please note:  We cannot do this for you.  Once your tax return is filed, it is out of our hands, and out of the hands of our software company.  The only way you can change your payment with the IRS is by calling the above telephone number.

Also, sadly, there is nothing that we are aware of, that can be done to change the State of Maine payment date.  So, if you have a direct debit coming out of your account for your State taxes, that payment will still come out on the date selected.

Stay safe.
